Pre-Departure Fundraising

Help us raise funds for our future Panamanian Community!

We are traveling to Panama for 27 months of Peace Corps Service
June 18th 2014-August 19th 2016

We are so excited for this opportunity, and will use this Blog as a way to keep you informed of our adventures and leanings.

As part of our pre- departure we are fundraising for our future Panamanian community. We will use money raised for a variety of purposes while volunteering in sustainable agriculture systems (SAS).  Your donation will also help toward ensuring we have all the required equipment for our 27 months of service.

To give you a better idea of what we will be up to, here are a few of our primary duties:

  • Work with local farmers in activities such as clearing land with a machete, planting with a coa (planting stick), weeding and harvesting in order to build working relationships and an understanding of traditional farming methods.
  • Conduct community and agricultural assessments with community partners to identify needed resources.
  • Educate farmers in the safe use of pesticides and less-toxic alternatives.
  • Promote establishment of rice and/or fish tanks to ensure families have protein rich food.
  • Develop sustainable agribusiness opportunities for farmers producing cash crops such as coffee, cacao, and grains.
Our specific projects will develop once we get to our site.  We also have the opportunity for side projects that can differ from sustainable agriculture (i.e. health care, education etc).
Money donated will helps us purchase items and resources needed for our projects.  Some examples are:
  • Vitamins for the community
  • School supplies
  • Supplies for aquaponics systems (PVC pipes, valves, fish tanks, etc)
  • Vegetable seeds
  • Education resources for farmers
Funds received will also help us pilot a project, making it more desirable for future grant funding!

Thank you so much, and stay tuned for much more to come.
